Mauritius has a centuries old history, that is why I choose to visit the ‘Eureka Villa’ in Moka, which is only a few kilometers away from the capital city, Port Louis. Eureka is a colonial mansion built in 1830. During a walk through the house, you will be transported to another time. Since Eureka was not architecturally changed this time travel is very authentic and you can be found in the 19th Century again. In the rooms with antique furniture made from fine woods such as ebony or mahogany, decorated with the finest detailed to carvings, Chinese porcelain and many more treasures from the past can be found. To know the story of the Eureka house, it is advisable to take a guided tour. From the dining room to the office, bedchambers of married couples and children up to the kitchen and bathroom equipment, it seems as if the Baron would return any moment. The kitchen is still in use to let the visitors enjoy culinary highlights on the spacious veranda. Another highlight of the Eureka Villa is the sprawling garden, which leads through tropical vegetation to a waterfall. Due to the large area of the garden of the Eureka Villa, different events are organized there, for instance, two weeks ago, the music festival ”Kaz-out”, with a variety of local musicians and bands, had been successfully organized. Eureka is a piece of history from the time when the sugar cane barons still lodged here. The historic flair is present in every room, and is definitely worth a visit, not only for historic buffs.
